Hey everyone, it’s Mike here, owner of Family Pool & Spa in Boise. If you’ve been hearing all the buzz about cold plunges lately, you’re not alone. Over the past year, we’ve installed more cold plunge tubs and chillers than ever before. Boise locals can’t seem to get enough of them. So I decided to write this guide to help you know exactly what to expect during your first month.
Week 1: “This Is Colder Than the Boise River!”
Let’s be honest — the first plunge is a shock. Most people last about 30–60 seconds and come out wide-eyed and gasping. Your body will feel a rush of adrenaline, your skin might tingle, and you’ll probably question your life choices. But here’s the good news: by day 3 or 4, you’ll already start noticing more energy during the day and better sleep at night. That’s your nervous system waking up and adapting.
Week 2: You Start Looking Forward to It
By the second week, something wild happens — you actually start anticipating the cold. Most of our customers tell me they’re sleeping deeper, recovering faster from workouts, and feeling mentally sharper. Inflammation goes down, and that post-plunge mood boost (thanks to all the dopamine and norepinephrine) becomes addictive.
Week 3–4: The Magic Kicks In
This is when people get hooked. By the end of your first month, you’ll likely be staying in 2–3 minutes comfortably. Many Boise customers report:
- Less joint pain and soreness
- Improved mood and lower stress levels
- Faster muscle recovery
- More consistent energy (goodbye afternoon crash)
- Start with 1–2 minutes and build up slowly
- Breathe through the initial shock (slow, deep breaths)
- End with a warm shower — never skip the contrast
- Keep your plunge water between 45–55°F for best results
Ready to join the cold plunge craze? Drop by the store or give us a call — I’d love to show you what all the obsession is about.
Stay cool,
Mike
